Israel Connect makes volunteering easy! Below are some FAQs to help you decide whether this opportunity is right for you:
Do I need to have teaching experience or be technologically savvy?
No! Absolutely no teaching experience is required, and our team will help with all the software and troubleshooting required to make sure the program runs smoothly.
How much of a time commitment do I need to make, and what if I need to cancel?
We hope that you can commit to 30 minutes a week (usually morning sessions), but we also supply substitute mentors if a volunteer needs to miss a session every so often.
Where will these sessions take place, and what do I talk about with students?
Wherever you have an internet connection, you can hold a session. Most volunteers work with students from the comfort of their home office or kitchen! Questions and conversational prompts are provided as a starting point while you develop a relationship with your special students.
How do I sign up?
To join our team of volunteers, you need to fill out a simple application form (find the form below), fulfill some security requirements, participate in a training session teaching you how to use our curriculum and software, and talk to our coordinator about your availability. For complete step by step instructions on how to sign up, please fill out the short application form below and we will be happy to send you our “onboarding” process.
How is Israel Connect funded?
Israel Connect is built around a community of individuals committed to ensuring all Israeli youth have access to English language learning. This community is comprised of volunteers, donors, supporters, staff, teachers, and principals. We ask that volunteers participate with a small monthly donation of $18 to help defray some costs of the program. If the cost of volunteering with us is a barrier to your participation, we will do our best to find a sponsor for you.
WHY OUR PROGRAM IS SO SUCCESSFUL
Studies have shown that language immersion is the best way to learn a new language. Thanks to today’s technology, truly immersive conditions can be created so that even students in Israel can learn the language in the most effective way.
Israel Connect volunteers are matched with students in Israel to share in a half hour dialogue based on our engaging curriculum. Due to the seven-hour time difference, these sessions take place in the North American morning while the students are finishing their school day in Israel. Every set of partners is given a consistent time and date on which they connect weekly.
The ideal volunteer is generally a retired or semi-retired individual, with 30 minutes to spare in the morning. Israel Connect provides complete technical support and training in the use of the simple video chat software for those who need it. Our volunteers are fluent in English and have an interest in helping young people to learn. As long as volunteers have access to an Internet connection, an Israel Connect coordinator will ensure all technical requirements are provided for before the first meeting. All subsequent sessions will also be facilitated, so volunteers don’t require any special technical skills.
In addition to the growing group of committed volunteers of all ages, Israel Connects also reaches out to senior centers and nursing homes, allowing seniors this wonderful interaction. Through technical training, Israel Connect allows even those who are less mobile to connect weekly with a student, enhancing their life with a fun visit. It has been proven time and time again that consistent human interactions can greatly impact the quality of life of the aged, and those who interact with seniors are in a position to have a tremendously positive impact. While making good company for their senior companion, students are encouraged to speak and improve their English skills. A real win-win situation!
